Dr. Angela Mazaris holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Her teaching and research focus on LGBTQ history, queer theory, public history, and gender studies, and she taught classes in these areas for Brown’s American Studies department. At Brown she also served as the first Coordinator of the LGBTQ Resource Center, and as Graduate Proctor at the Sarah Doyle Women’s Center. She was also a member of Brown’s Diversity Advisory Board, where she worked specifically on issues related to first-generation students and social class. While in Providence, she served on the board of the Equity Action Fund, Rhode Island’s fund for LGBTQ initiatives, and volunteered at Youth Pride, Inc. Before coming to Wake Forest, Dr. Mazaris served as a Presidential Management Fellow at the Internal Revenue Service and the National Park Service, where she developed agency-wide inclusion and diversity initiatives and prepared policy recommendations. At the IRS, Dr. Mazaris was in charge of a special emphasis program for LGBTQ issues – a first for the agency. Dr. Mazaris and her partner have a three-year-old daughter, and are happy to now call Winston-Salem home.

Melanie LeMay graduated from the University Notre Dame in 2010 with a BA in English and Gender Studies. While at ND, Melanie was a member of the Core Council for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Questioning students and co-chair of the unrecognized student groups AllianceND and OutreachND. She continues working toward equality and acceptance of LGBTQ students, faculty, staff, and alumni as the chair of GALA-ND/SMC, the unrecognized alumni organization serving Notre Dame and its sister school, Saint Mary’s College. Melanie has worked at Resource Center Dallas serving the LGBTQ and HIV/AIDS communities in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and as a Teach For America Corps Member, where she taught 7th grade English language arts and reading in Dallas ISD and served in an LGBTQ focus group. LGBTQ rights are her passion, and as the Program Coordinator at the Wake Forest LGBTQ Center, Melanie is responsible for the Center website, as well as crafting initiatives such as Safe Zone, QWake, and Out for Lunch.
Rachel Goldberg

Rachel Goldberg is an undergraduate senior originally from Hollis, New Hampshire and is majoring in Business Enterprise Management (with a concentration in Marketing) while minoring in Spanish. She stays very involved on campus serving as a third year resident adviser, and president of the National Residence Hall Honorary. Additionally, Rachel is a fourth year member of the Spirit of the Old Gold and Black, the university marching band. Rachel spent last semester studying abroad in Salamanca, Spain. Over the summer she interned in Nicaragua, doing marketing research and publicity for two NGOs. She got involved working with the LGBTQ Center through her work study, and is very much looking forward to creating and implementing programs on campus to raise awareness and promote tolerance within the Wake Forest Community.

Essence Walton is an undergraduate freshman from Charlotte, North Carolina. She is currently a participant of Wake Forest’s Gospel Choir, Student Union and Black Student Alliance. Essence hopes to assist where she is needed in the LGBTQ Center.

Stephanie Goyeneche is an undergraduate freshman from Boston, Massachusetts. She plays on the Wake Forest club soccer team and is part of the volunteer service corps. Stephanie is a member of the Greensboro Church of Christ.

Misha Powell is a sophomore from Durham, North Carolina. She is a student government legislator and a participant in the Black Student Alliance. Misha hope to help out in any way that she can in the Center and to hopefully encourage her peers to promote equality and inclusion throughout the Wake Forest community.
