Film Screening: Brother Outsider
Wednesday, February 20th, 6pm, ZSR Auditorium 404
The Office of Multicultural Affairs and the LGBTQ Center will be hosting a film screening of Brother Outsider as a part of Black History Month. During his 60-year career as an activist, organizer and “troublemaker,” Bayard Rustin formulated many of the strategies that propelled the American civil rights movement. His passionate belief in Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolence drew Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders to him in the 1940′s and 50′s; his practice of those beliefs drew the attention of the FBI and police. In 1963, Rustin brought his unique skills to the crowning glory of his civil rights career: his work organizing the March on Washington, the biggest protest America had ever seen. But his open homosexuality forced him to remain in the background, marking him again and again as a “brother outsider.”

Parading Toward Equality: A Talk by Dr. Katherine Bruce
Friday, February 8th, 3:30-4:30pm, Carswell 208
Every year, over six million people participate in 110 LGBT Pride parades across the United States. Some march as part of church, school, business, or non-profit contingents while others attend with friends and cheer from the sidelines. Together they create fabulous celebrations of gay sexuality, acceptance, and playful defiance of cultural stigma. Drawing on interviews and field work at six Pride parades, from Fargo, ND’s modest 15 minute march to New York City’s 5-hour long parade, Dr. Bruce shows how these events work to bring about greater cultural equality for lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender people. With implications for how scholars understand the work of social movements, this talk will explore how advocates work together to change their culture. Dr. Katherine Bruce is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology at Wake Forest. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research examines the interplay of cultural and political contention primarily through the lens of LGBT issues.
